Admission

All students are admitted to the program as Freshmen (first-year students). Students may not transfer into the program. Applicants complete the HKU – UC Berkeley Supplemental Application and the standard UC application. Complete information on how to apply to UC Berkeley can be found here.

Admission to the program is highly competitive. Students must be admitted to both UC Berkeley and HKU to be considered for the Dual Degree Program. Students are evaluated according to the following criteria: academic achievement, perceived intellectual readiness, and the applicant’s own representation of their experience, ideas, and aspirations. Candidates must meet UC Berkeley and HKU admissions requirements, including English proficiency requirements.

Applications

* You must first create an account before you can access the HKU – UC Berkeley Supplemental application. This account is not linked to the account you will create for the University of California application.

NOTE: 2021 applications are now closed. 2022 applications will open in summer 2021.

Please note that SAT/ACT test scores are not used for any part of the UC Berkeley admission process, including evaluation/holistic review, selection, or scholarship processes. If you provide a SAT or ACT score, it will be seen only by the University of Hong Kong for consideration of the Dual Degree program. For more information, please visit this University of California admissions page

HKU Supplemental Application

Students should not apply directly to HKU (unless they are studying and completing the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) in Hong Kong, please see below) to be admitted to the Dual Degree Program. The supplemental application will serve as the application to HKU and the Dual Degree.

Supplemental Application Essay Question:

In 750 to 1,000 words, describe the motivations that have led you to apply to the Dual Degree program. Explain how and why the multidisciplinary educational environments at The University and Hong Kong (in the social sciences and humanities) and at Berkeley (within the College of Letters & Science) will help you to achieve your intellectual, personal, and professional aspirations. You may also choose to explain how you foresee your involvement in campus life outside of the classroom.

The essay should be written in English.

Special note for Hong Kong residents: ONLY students who are studying and completing the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) in Hong Kong will need to complete a third application via JUPAS. HK residents who will be completing an international curriculum such as IB/ A Level / SAT, ACT, or AP only need to complete the UCB application and the HKU supplemental application.

Due to COVID-19, students applying for fall 2021 who are not able to present achievements in any national or international examinations will be considered based on their academic merit and any provisional results that are made available regarding academic achievements and readiness for the programme.

Wherever possible, students are encouraged to meet the admissions requirements by presenting the necessary credentials and inform the University immediately if they are unable to do so due to circumstances beyond their control.

An interview with shortlisted candidates may be carried out in person or online during the evaluation process.
